This is extremely interesting but I need to add another side.  Did this man know what he signed up for when he married this lady?  This is not a normal  household. Is the heroine OBSESSED with more & more children & using him as the support?  HER need, not his.  And they are not all theirs, some are adopted.  He works all  day, then comes home to CHAOS - which might not be a happy life for him.  If he was intent on running an orphanage it might work, lol. This does not sound like a man having an outside affair but one who needs to ESCAPE, lol.   And somehow he finds a way to part with this mess - which is a mess for him, not her. Her cash cow is gone, now she has to bear it & she did.  But she must admit - she was USING him! The movie of course gives only her side - I imagined the rest.
