This actor is MICHAEL PALIN - the Great Grandson of the man he is portraying.....Oxford U ony permitted women to attend lectures in 1870 - they could not get degrees. In 1920 they were finally awarded degrees. Our Ivy League Schools like Yale only admitted women in 1976! This film portrays how oppressive Patriarchs were to women & how hard-won the freedom we have today has been. The 'dons' or 'Fellows' of the U were not allowed to get married until 1877. It seems like Patriarchy is a homo sexual woldd. Men love men, they stick together, leave women out & only used women for their own agenda - whatever that is, be it sex for peasure or breeding - women were used as household companions & de facto slaves - cooking, cleaning, taking care of the brood. Women previous to the two feminist movements could not get jobs or the education you need for jobs - this exemplifies it. Their best hope was to get a man to 'take care of them' as portrayed here. I don't believe this movie is accurate for what I know of life; that a beautiful young lady here portrayed would so aggressively want this much oder man - he wrote the journal so if he said so, it might have been wishful thinking. I doubt if she was BEAUTIFUL ike this actress. If she WAS she would not have been so DESPERATE to get this guy - many would have wanted to marry her. And the female his own age, also beautiful here, got passed over because old men want young women; young men like older women. See my book on being a cougar, lol. And oh yes another important point: Th beauty went out alone at night & the police chased her through the street as they thought she was a 'tart.' Women were arrested for 'soliciting' if they were caught walking alone in the street - even today, beieve it or not! In Patriarchy you have to be OWNED by a man, your Dad or esle your husband - you are not considered a full human being, capable of iving an autonomous life.
