Wild Horses: Nature's Survivors in North America

Wild horses in America -SOME- descended from Spanish ones brought here in the 1600's. We BRED them to be all kinds of breeds for OUR needs & purposes - not for the horse; for whatever we wanted like running FAST or being STRONG to pull & work, or certain colors, etc. NONE of which matters to the hourse as far as survival. Leave the horses alone in the wild for 300 years they will all breed 'down' to a smaller, tougher horse suitable for SURVIVAL. Thy have ELABORATE social structures. The lead stallion is concerned with but 2 things: Keep the other males away & breed his 'harem.' But he DOES NOT make the decisions of where to go to graze pasture & all that, that belongs to the MATRIARCHAL MARE. So he doesn't OWN the mares the way Patriarchs want us to believe, it's actually the FEMALE that is the head of the herd except for the 2 things that he does. Then the teenage stallions are sent off by the lead male where they form bands just like cocky teenage boys. And the old guys are also shunted off where they don't last long  possibly because of being alone for the first time in their lives; horses find it hard to be ALONE, they are HERD animals.
Another perspective: they DESCENDED from a primitive horse here in the US millions of years ago - they have ancient skeletons like 'Hagerman Horse' - & EVOLVED - See the rest of this informative video.  Rasa
